Mermaid Spell for Reconciling Your Duelling Nature
Mermaid spell for reconciling your duelling nature
Known for being brutal and beautiful, both protectors and destroyers of men, humanlike, but never quite part of our world, the one consistent trait that mermaids portray is inconsistency. As symbols of duality, they can help us embrace our likely less-dramatic contradictory aspects.
First, write a little in your journal or on a piece of paper about traits of your personality that tend to pull in opposite directions. Do you love parties but feel shy when speaking to new people? Live for sports but hate competition? Are you a morning person but get your best ideas late at night? Maybe some of these contradictions are bothersome – your love for minimalist spaces doesn’t manifest itself in your perpetually messy desk – and maybe some make you feel quirky in a lovable way – you hate being the centre of attention but can’t help breakdancing at every bar with a dance floor. Write down everything that comes to mind. When you’re done, read over your list, trying not to judge one way or the other, simply observing yourself from a distance.
Now find yourself a quiet spot. (You don’t need your list any more.) Sit near the ocean’s edge if you can. If that’s not possible, set yourself up with a few shells, a little bowl of salt water, and play some ocean sounds in the background.
Think of syncing your breathing with the rhythm of the waves. In and out. Slowly. In and out. There is no rush. Let the rhythm repeat itself. Don’t worry if you’re not syncing exactly, the point is just to breathe deeply and become still within yourself as the tide goes in and out.
The ocean is dangerous but also life-giving. Beautiful but full of strange, alien-like creatures. Dark underneath but luminous in moonlight. A connection to worlds far away but a soothing reminder to be happy exactly where you are.
You, too, have many forces that pull in opposite directions – towards creation and destruction, towards darkness, and towards light. You needn’t choose one side or the other, or give up conflicting traits. Like a mermaid, you’re a shapeshifter. You’re at home by the ocean.
